Dove Cay is one of the more popular areas to snorkel on South Caicos, and is within swimming distance from the resort’s beach. As you snorkel out to the cay, you will pass over turtle grass. Look down and you’ll likely see stingrays and turtles. The cay is surrounded by shallow waters, allowing you to see lobsters, soft and hard corals, and magnificent smaller marine life you may not see in deeper waters.
Located next to Dove Cay is another great snorkeling venue called Long Cay. It is best visited by kayak or an organized snorkeling boat trip. Almost 2 miles in length, Long Cay has been designated as a sanctuary for rock iguanas which are a critically endangered species. One of the snorkeling sites here is fittingly called the ‘Aquarium’. French Grunt, Trigger-fish, Squirrel fish, Snapper, Grouper and even Barracuda are some of the fish you may come across. The ecosystem is the most vibrant in this area which is mainly due to the deep onshore currents which bring nutrients in from the Columbus Passage. Those who enjoy underwater photography will be impressed by the amazing macro opportunities this area has to offer.
