The Wildlife of South Caicos

Though South Caicos is only eight miles long, it is full of some of the most incredibly diverse wildlife in the Caribbean. On land, birders will delight in finding flamingos in their natural habitat. South Caicos is home to West Indian flamingos, famous for their distinctive pink colouring. Interestingly, flamingos get their colour from an algae that they consume regularly containing beta carotene, a chemical that produces a reddish-orange tint. You’ll also find beta-carotene in many different plants, including — you guessed it — carrots.Along with the flamingos, guests of South Caicos can witness dozens of other winged species, including ospreys, herons, doves, and more. If you’d rather see an animal with four legs, there is an opportunity to see wild horses and donkeys that roam the island, as well as rock iguanas and geckos.Let’s not forget the most diverse life that you’ll find in the Turks and Caicos, located beneath the surface. Protected by a barrier reef, sea life thrives in the shallows around South Caicos. Along with dozens of species of tropical fish and coral, guests may see rays, sea turtles, and even sharks. If you visit us in the winter, you may even have the opportunity to see humpback whales as they migrate through the Turks and Caicos passage! To see the wildlife on land, East Bay is equipped with complimentary bicycles to allow guests an easy opportunity to explore the island.
